Magoki Attori Mosque.
Welcome to my blog 😊.
My fourth practice day in the historical place of Bukhara.
Date:26.01.2023.
Day: Thursday.
Historical place: Magoki Attori Mosque.
Location: Bukhara region.
In the centre of Bukhara to the west of the famous Lyabi Hauz square is located the oldest mosque in Bukhara – Magoki Attori – is located.
Its construction in 714 is associated with the name of the Arab Sheikh, Governor of Khorasan, Qutayba Ibn Muslim – one of the first people who brought Islam to the territory of Central Asia. Even before the arrival of the Arabs to Bukhara, a bazaar was located on the site of the mosque, where before the establishment of Islam, Zoroastrian idols, medicinal herbs and spices – attoron – were sold. And in the beginning, this place was called Attoron Bazaar. There was also a cult Zoroastrian temple of the Moon.
It forms a part of the historical religious complex of Lyab-i Hauz. The mosque is located in the historical center of Bukhara, about 300 meters southwest of Po-i-Kalyan, 100 meters southwest of the Toqi Telpak Furushon trading dome and 100 meters east of Lab-i Hauz. It is a part of UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Centre of Bukhara. Today, the mosque is used as a carpet museum.
The name of the mosque goes back to pre-Islamic times. At that time, there was a pit (Magok) at this place. It also had a small bazaar where merchants sold mainly spices and herbs. The second part of the name comes from the term “Attar” means “scent merchant” or “spice merchant”.
Today, the mosque houses a carpet museum.
In the 1930s, the building was finally uncovered and renovated.
The building is rectangular with an area of 12 by 7.5 metres. The original portal is slightly asymmetrical and is framed on the flat roof by two octagonal drums, which are also equipped with octagonal domes. The lower portal is richly decorated with an ornament of custom-carved and layered brick tiles. Geometric patterns adorn the entrance.
All in all, the Magoki-Attori Mosque is an excellent example of Central Asian architecture during the Kara-khanid epoch.
I learnt a lot of information from this journey. Moreover it is useful for our speaking skills.Learning history is very interesting for me and also my groupmates.
My fourth practice day is over🙃
Good bye😉
